A secret solution to global warming?
According to the video Soil: The Secret Solution to Global Warming, land farmed organically, using such methods as "no-till" and the planting of winter cover crops, absorbs and holds up to 30% more carbon than conventional agriculture. Wow! That's really interesting. Too bad all of the huge industrial farms are totally unhealthy for the environment to begin with. I wouldn't want to touch the soil there at all!
I'll just stick to buying my local, organic produce... I definitely need to make a trip to the farm though and see how they do things!
Also, to help out with the whole farming/environment/loss of trees thing... I'm working for a small non-profit called Sustainable Harvest International. They work with farmers in Central America and teach them sustainable, organic forms of farming to help stop slash and burn, thereby saving rainforests, and making the farmers and their families economically independent. It seems way better to me to do things this way than to just go in and try to plant trees somewhere. Find sources of forest destruction, and instead of trying to halt it, find better solutions!
