Decline in common birds
A startling drop in various kinds of common birds like sparrows, chickadees and meadow larks, is reported by the National Audobon Society. Attributed to suburban sprawl, big agriculture and pesticides, the drop in their numbers is a sign that their grassland and shrub habitats are diminishing. Analysis by Audobon suggests that these threats are compounded by new and broader problems such as global warming. See Disappearing Common Birds Send Environmental Wake-up Call.
