Lake Superior is falling & its temperature rising
Lake Superior's surface area is the largest of any freshwater lake on Earth. It's deep enough to hold all other Great Lakes plus 3 additional Lake Eries. Yet its level has reached its lowest point in 8 decades and may soon set a record if it falls another 7.6 centimetres, predicted later this year.
Its average temperature has increased as well - about 4.5 degrees Farenheit in recent decades, well above the average rise in the region's air temperature over the same timeframe. Water levels have fallen on the other Great Lakes since the late 1990s, but Lake Superior's changes are particulary worrisome. See The mystery of Lake Superior's low levels, surging temperatures.
