Honeybee deaths not yet understood
In the U.S., up to a million bee colonies out of 2.4 million total colonies have died since last fall. Determining the cause is vital to U.S. agriculture because many fruit, vegetable and seed crops rely on honeybees for pollination. Genetically modified foods, mites, pathogens, pesticides and cell phone signals have all been suggested as possible causes of vanishing bees, but actual causes are unknown.
From Cornell University, see Decimation of bee colonies has various causes, with parasites, pathogens and pesticides possible suspects, Cornell expert says.
